Update: 4/03/2008
The United Way of Mifflin-Juniata held their annual Campaign Dinner on Thursday at the Central Juniata EMS building to mark the end of the fundraising campaign. Executive Director of the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata, Marie Mulvihill, joyfully announced to staff and volunteers that the 2007 goal of $595,900 had been met. In fact the goal had been surpassed and $600,895 had been raised. The many businesses, organizations, and individuals who helped reach this goal were recognized for their efforts during the dinner.
Each year the amount of money raised is not announced until the end of the dinner. This year there were two clever twists to the announcement. First the total that had been raised at the end of the previous week was woven into a series of songs sung by The Boyz; an all-male singing group made up of teachers and retired teachers from the Juniata County School District. By the conclusion of their set of songs from the 50s and 60s, it was revealed that a total short of the goal, $590,895 had been reached. This was 99% of the goal.
Mulvihill, showing just a bit of disappointment in her tone, began thanking the volunteers and staff for their donations and time. Then, staffer Cristy Yoders came dashing into the room with a telegram which was given to Mulvihill to read. The message stated that Case New Holland was making a last-minute donation of $10,000. This put the campaign over the goal! Of course, the telegram was a prop, but Case New Holland had in fact made their donation just two days prior to the date of the Campaign Dinner.
Mulvihill stated that large donations such as this are important to the campaign. However, just has important are the many small donations made by individuals and businesses. She also stressed the critical importance of the dedication and time provided by the many volunteers and the staff of the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata.
James Spendiff, President of the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata, ended the evening by remarking that "the fact that we reached our goal speaks volumes and you are a caring community."
