Update: 6/01/2009
UWMJ raised $565,309 to help those in need. This year, many of us were concerned with the economy but loyal donors understand that United Way funds help many people in the community who face challenges that may have nothing to do with pocketbook issues. The person who gives to United Way one year may be looking for help the next.
"It never ceases to amaze me - to raise this amount of money in this tough economic time is a tribute to the extraordinary generosity of our community," said Marie Mulvihill, Executive Director of the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata. This year's campaign concluded on March 25, 2009 with a dinner held at Birch Hill, Burnham.
"From working closely with our program partners, we know needs increase dramatically in challenging times. We shared this message with our community throughout the campaign, and the good people of the Mifflin and Juniata counties responded with tremendous support," continued Mulvihill.
Community leaders and human services agencies have put together a plan to make sure families hit hard by the economic downturn do not go without food or shelter. We also want to help families position themselves so that they can sustain themselves with little or no outside support. This new initiative, that United Way supports, is the Coalition of HOPES (Help Offering Programs and Essential Services). To reach this single point of contact for services, call 717.248,2552.
