United Way Seeks 13th Annual “Day of Caring” Participants

Day of Caring is a traditional United Way of Mifflin-Juniata volunteer event that kicks off the annual campaign every September. The 13th Annual Day of Caring will take place on September 15, 2010 this year. Registration is now open for both volunteer teams and agency projects.

The two main objectives of Day of Caring are to provide non-profit human service agencies an opportunity to complete projects that they could not otherwise afford to do and to involve volunteers, especially employees, in first-hand experience with area charities. Day of Caring provides an opportunity for people to donate a day of community service.

“Day of Caring is great because it allows the community to come together. People helping people,” said Marie Mulvihill, Executive Director. “Coworkers spend quality time together while helping out their neighbor.”

“Every year the Day of Caring gets bigger and bigger. More people want to give back to our community, and that is the most rewarding part of this entire event,” explains Holly McCready, AmeriCorps VISTA and organizer of this year’s Day of Caring.

In order for there to be an event, the United Way is seeking projects from non-profit human service agencies. Any incorporated non-profit or government entity, school or neighborhood association is encouraged to submit projects. Agencies do not have to be a partner agency receiving United Way funding to benefit from Day of Caring. Agencies who participate in Day of Caring can focus their resources on those they serve. “We encourage agencies to submit all their projects, big and small,” said Mulvihill. “We get volunteer teams of all sizes and skill levels. We can’t promise that every project submitted will get completed, but we have a very good track record to date.” There is one change this year: we will no longer accept cleaning projects.

Teams of caring individuals in Mifflin and Juniata counties who want to lend a hand and make a difference in their local community are also needed. Teams are formed from individuals at local businesses, associations, service groups, and even other non-profits. Teams can be any size and any skill level. Day of Caring is a free event for participants and is made possible by the generosity of our sponsors. Volunteers are only asked to donate their time to help build a stronger community for all of us.

The registration deadline for both non-profit agencies and teams is August 11, 2010. For more information and to register a project or a team visit www.mjunitedway.org/doc, then click on the appropriate link (Volunteer Team or Agency ). Registration will be done online at United Way’s website. Any questions should be directed to Holly McCready at 717.248.9636.

The United Way of Mifflin-Juniata reserves the right to refuse any agencies whose volunteer programs’ missions and purposes it finds contrary to the spirit of volunteerism.
