SB6 History
Success By 6 was established locally in 2002, through the
Community Engagement Grant as the Early Care and Education Action
Team with Mifflin County Communities That Care. In 2005 the action
team merged with the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata to form the early
childhood initiative Success By 6.
The goals of the Community Engagement grants are:
- To develop and implement a community outreach plan to
educate and foster relationships with parents, government,
businesses, schools, and the early learning community about
issues in early learning such as Pennsylvania's Promise for
Children, Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts, Keystone STARS and Child
Care Works.
- To be the county point of contact for Pennsylvania's Promise
for Children materials.
- To facilitate linkages between school districts, early
learning practitioners, and other community stakeholders for the
purpose of developing a community action plan to support
successful kindergarten transitions.
- To appropriately leverage resources and support in the
community.
Success By 6 has been funded since 2002 by the Community
Engagement Grant under the Office of Child Development and Early
Learning at the Department of Public Welfare and Department of
Education.
Success By 6, the early childhood initiative under the United Way
of Mifflin-Juniata is a coalition of the public working together to
ensure that the children living in Mifflin and Juniata county’s
enter school healthy, well-cared for and ready to succeed in school
and in life. It operates on these premises:
- When families and caregivers provide quality early childhood
development, children enter school ready to succeed.
- When children start school ready to succeed, they are more
likely to read at grade level by 3rd grade.
- When children read at grade level by 3rd grade, they are
more likely to graduate from high school.
- When children graduate from high school, they are more
likely to go on to higher education and/or enter the job market
as tax paying citizens.
- Successful citizens contribute to the economic and social
vibrancy of our community.
