Mobilizing Business and Community Support

Success By 6 is a community collaboration that brings together community volunteers, parents, human service providers, business and educators to create a community where every child can succeed in school.

Where the funding comes from and where it goes: $110,937

CEG – Community Engagement Grant:

Providing leadership, solutions and partnerships in the early childhood arena. Funded through the Department of Public Welfare and Office of Child Development and Early Learning.

MC Transition – Kindergarten:

In-service with teachers and providers, “Getting Acquainted” Station at registration, registration packets, Animal Awareness Day
and:

JC Transition – Kindergarten:

    In-service with teachers and providers and small group meetings

Prof. Dev. – Professional Development Conferences:

Mifflin-Juniata Early Childhood Conference
November 17, 2008, Cedar Grove Church, Mifflintown. 16 sessions offered to 75 Early Childhood Practitioners.
“Are We There Yet?”-Nurturing the Emotional well-being of young children
May 14, 2008, Juniata College, Huntingdon. 34 sessions offered to 350 Early Childhood Practitioners.

Calendar-“Getting Ready for Kindergarten”:

Over 1,000 children in Mifflin and Juniata Counties received the school readiness calendar, filled with a year’s worth of activities and ideas to help children prepare for kindergarten.

CHIP – Children’s Health Insurance Outreach:

Media Outreach, dental presentations with United Concordia at centers. Books and toothbrushes were provided to 422 kindergarteners in Mifflin County and 272 kindergarteners in Juniata County

JC CTF- Children’s Trust Fund:

400 Parent Information Newsletters were distributed quarterly to all JC school district families, head start, child care providers and local agencies & businesses. The 6th, 8th,10th and 12th graders in JC School District participated in the PA Youth Survey.

Inc. Yrs. – Incredible Years:

8 child care classrooms and 2 private preschools implemented this blue print curriculum that strengthens children’s social & emotional competencies.

Highmark:

37 children were screened for vision, speech, hearing, & developmental delays at the Children’s Health Fair held at CJEMS, Mifflintown. 25 community agencies supported the event.

 

Penn State WPSU is partnering with Success By 6 to implement PBS Raising Readers – a four year grant intended to develop multimedia and community activities to help children form low-income families, ages 2-8 years, acquire the skill they need to build their reading skills.

Community Partners include: MC Pre-K Counts, MC Head Start, TIU #11 and the MC Library.

Activities:

  • Story time with Parker the Penguin: November 11, 2007. 100 pre-school children attended story hour in the Historic Courthouse

  • 4) early childhood providers participated in “WPSU Classroom Visits”

  • SUPER WHY! Community Workshop: March 31, 2008 – 50 families participated in the parent workshop and children activities

  • “Up, Down and Around,” Story time: April 26, 2008 – over 400 children participated in story time at Kid Connection

Safe Kids of Mifflin-Juniata:

  • June 07 - 67 children participated in Bike Derbies at the local playgrounds

  • Over 50 children received new bike helmets

  • Over 80 car seats were inspected in Mifflin and Juniata County

  • Community Partners include MJ PATH, Lewistown Hospital, MC Regional Police, and Penn DOT
