What is Success by 6? |
United Way’s Success By 6 initiative
works to ensure that children succeed when they enter school. The
United Way Success By 6 initiative is based on long-term research on
brain development, quality childcare and early intervention.
According to medical and scientific research, the experiences of
young children in the first six years have a lasting impact on later
success in school and life.
United Way Success By 6 began at United Way of Minneapolis Area in
1988 through a collaborative effort of the mayor, the Chief
Executive Officer of Honeywell Corporation, the Superintendent of
Schools and the Chief Professional Officer of United Way of
Minneapolis Area. In 1998, the Bank of America Foundation made a
five-year commitment of $50 million to expand the United Way Success
By 6 early childhood network. The receipt of this national grant has
enabled the United Way to increase its number of Success By 6
initiatives to over 350 initiatives across the United States and
Canada.
Success By 6 is not an agency or a program and does not provide
direct services, but the initiatives do share the following
characteristics:
- A vision for all children with focus on creating sustained
changes in community
conditions that improve children’s lives
- Community-wide in focus
- Strategies focused on influencing formal or informal
systems/policies to affect
children & parents or caregivers.
- Multi-sector partners that share leadership, determine
policy/practice, and
implement strategies
- Public and private resources that are leveraged and blended
to support implementation of multiple strategies
