Youth Day of Caring 2009: Saturday, April 25

About the Youth Day of Caring:

This year we are tying the Youth Day of Caring efforts to Earth Day, April 22, and Earth Week, April 19-25.  Student volunteers from both Mifflin and Juniata Counties will be doing volunteer projects that help promote citizenship.

We are looking for two things:  Volunteer students at least 16 years of age and sites -places to do "green" projects.  Students will learn the duties, obligations, and functions of a citizen: caring about people, places, and plants.

  • Student volunteers can sign up as individuals or as a group
  • All volunteers must complete the Volunteer Release Form

Details:

  • When:  Saturday, April 25, 2009 from 9am - 3pm
  • Where: Mifflin and Juniata Counties: parks, agencies, schools, etc.
  • Deadline to Register: April 8, 2009
  • Contact: Holly McCready, United Way AmeriCorps VISTA member, at 717-248-9636 or vista@mjunitedway.org

Agencies:

Any non-profit, organization, government entity, school, and/or neighborhood association recognized by the borough, municipality, county or state can submit a project application expressing interest in having volunteers work on outdoor projects.  Sites are expected to have personnel to manage the project and provide lunch.  Please complete and submit the Agency Project Application form.

History

Since 1994, the Youth Day of Caring works to expose youth to social and community issues by engaging them in volunteer activities.

Finding success with the local youth, Adult Day of Caring was started in 1997. Over the years, the Youth Day of Caring has expanded to both Mifflin and Juniata counties, more than quadrupling the number of volunteers.

In 2008, efforts were made to expand the Youth Day of Caring into a year of service, however, due to insufficient fiscal resources and a lack of internal manpower, this dream has yet to happen. We hope the Youth Day of Caring continues to grow, eventually into a year-round service to the community.
